My Boyfriend Dumped Me By Text Message

Text messages and emails have replaced personal conversations to such an extent that it's not uncommon to breakup via text message.

You don't want to establish a precedent of discussing critically important issues electronically. First, it's too easy to ignore a text message so it becomes very likely that your future messages won't be taken seriously.

The other problem with text messaging during or after a breakup is you run the risk of misinterpreting a message. Messages are meant to be brief and not convey deeper meaning, so your true feelings can't be expressed or it can easily be misinterpreted.

The reason your ex may want to limit your communication to text messages is because there's no face to face meeting, so it's in his best interest to keep you at a distance. It limits his anxiety, and actually makes it easier to say a hurtful comment without fear of retaliation.

A bit of a cowardly approach on his part, but most guys don't see anything wrong with text message breakups.

What do you do if you get a text message breakup?

Don't engage in discussing specific issues via text message. He needs closure once he initiates the breakup. He need you to understand and accept the breakup before he can move on. Don't give him that closure with a text message.

You have very little leverage in this situation, so withholding a critical conversation to a time and method of your choosing are definitely to your advantage.

There's more about this situation discussed in the full version of the Magic Of Making Up. You'll learn how to get an in-person meeting, and more importantly, what you need to say during that meeting.
